Date: October 07 Party: (from left to right) Me, Drew Trail Length: 36 Days on Trail: 3 Trail Notes: Well, Drew felt bad that he didn't go on the Quehanna trail, so we had to pull something off before the temp started to drop. I'd been wanting to do this trail for a while, so this seeemed like a good opportunity. Highlights of this trail were without a doubt the colors. We came at the right time of year (as you can see in the pictures). Unforutnatly, the pictures don't do the true sceenery justice. Also, the trail runs through Oil Creek State Park, which was an old oil boom town back in the day. Some of the orriginal structures are around to see as you pass through the woods, others have been reconstructed by the park for our enjoyment. Either way, it was kind of cool to hike a trial that has some history. This was a real nice trail. It was very well blazed and maintained. Since it's a state park you have to use the shelters. At first, I was not real happy with that, but when we got there, we really enjoyed it. They cut a ton of firewood for us to use and the bathrooms were VERY clean. I was impressed. The weather, on the other hand, was not as nice as the trail. The first night we got hammered with rain, thunder and lighting. Drew and I stayed in the shelter that night (yeah, we're babies). The only problems we had were Drew's ankles. He kept spraining them and it kept getting worse (at least that's what he says). I tried to talk him into sitting down and letting drive out and pick him up. I almost had him convinced when he realized there was only about a 1/4 mile left. So he sucked it up and pushed in. Things we learned from this trip. First, park rangers don't always know what's going on. We had to hike (needlessly) into the ranger's office to pay for the use of the shelters on day one (added about a mile). We could have (and should have) just gone in on the way home. Second, Drew taught me that you NEVER (EVER) shine your headlamp down the toilet in the outhouse. Yeah, he wasn't real hungry that night. There seems to be a common issue with Drew and bathrooms when we go hiking...just an observation. |
